The Power of Pause: Resilience in the Depths of EDI Advocacy

Working in the world of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is a journey that's both thrilling and demanding. As a dedicated EDI practitioner, I find immense joy in empowering organizations with the knowledge and significance of EDI. Yet, amid this dynamic landscape, I've come to realize that self-care isn't just a trendy concept—it's a fundamental aspect crucial for sustaining my passion and impact in this vital field.

Let's talk about the personal side of it. After engaging in challenging EDI conversations, I've learned that taking time to rest is not just a luxury; it's an absolute necessity. The work of an EDI consultant is transformative, but it comes with its own challenges. Navigating complex conversations, addressing systemic issues, and advocating for change can be emotionally and mentally draining. As someone deeply committed to the cause, I've had to acknowledge the toll it takes on my well-being.

weathering storms

In my journey, there were moments when the gravity of the issues seemed insurmountable. Specifically, in early December, following a challenging discussion, doubt crept in, causing me to question the worthiness of the work I passionately engage in. Contemplating a potential shift in career direction, I found myself opening a new LinkedIn tab, prepared to initiate a job search. However, at that critical juncture, taking a step back proved transformative, offering a renewed perspective. I permitted myself to rest—not just for a couple of hours, but for days.

Recognizing the importance of intentional rest has been a game-changer for me. Rest isn't just about sleep; it's about taking intentional breaks to recharge both mind and spirit. It's understanding that the marathon of EDI advocacy requires a well-rested and resilient runner. Taking a step back is not a sign of weakness—it's a commitment to the longevity of my impact.

Prioritizing mental health is paramount. It's the very foundation upon which my EDI efforts stand. Mental well-being is not a luxury but a prerequisite for sustainable advocacy. In the fast-paced and challenging world of EDI, I've found solace in mindfulness practices. Whether it's a few minutes of deep breathing, a nature walk, or indulging in a hobby (ok, eating chocolate), these intentional moments of self-care significantly impact mental resilience.

nurturing wellbeing

In prioritizing my own well-being, I offer these tips that have been super helpful for me:

  1. Embrace Breaks as a Form of Strength: Recognize that incorporating breaks into your routine isn't a sign of weakness; rather, it's a strategic maneuver ensuring you can sustain a meaningful impact. Just as you diligently schedule meetings, allocate time for breaks. Treating your well-being with the same significance as your professional commitments is imperative. I consistently remind myself that a productive workday involves intentional breaks. Understanding that my mind can't perpetually dwell in the creative and challenging EDI strategic space underscores the necessity for moments of pause and rejuvenation.

  2. Incorporate Mindfulness into Your Routine: Integrate mindfulness practices daily. Whether it's meditation, walks, or just being present in the moment, these practices enhance your mental resilience. Acknowledge that your mental health is as crucial as the work you do, and prioritize it accordingly.

  3. Build a Support System: Cultivate a network of support within and outside the EDI community. Share experiences, insights, and challenges with trusted colleagues or mentors. Knowing you're not alone in this journey provides tremendous strength and encouragement.

As a fellow EDI practitioner, remember that our impact is profound but slow, so it’s important to focus on caring for ourselves for the long journey. By nurturing our well-being, we fortify the foundation upon which our advocacy stands. Prioritize rest and mental health, not just for yourself but for a more resilient and impactful EDI landscape.
